Key Technology Trends in eCommerce for 2023

As you refresh your ecommerce site for back-to-school rush, it is best to learn more about ecommerce technology trends that can improve your website and help boost your sales. Here are the four largest trends for 2023.

Social Commerce

Social commerce has evolved tremendously, and with shoppable Facebook and Instagram tools customers have a direct way to buy products seen on social media. In fact, 60% of Generation Z in the US use Instagram to discover new brands and products and 48% have purchased from social media.

Facebook and Instagram have many tools and features to help brands make their pages shoppable. You now have the capability to tag products in posts, the same way that you would tag a person. Customers can then click on the product to buy directly, instead of needing to open a browser and purchase the product from a website. This greatly eliminates the dreaded shopping cart abandonment. A recent study suggests that brands using Instagram shopping have benefited from a 1,416% traffic boost and a 20% increase in revenue.

Mobile Shopping

Gen Z are the mobile shoppers, the most of any generation to utilize mobile apps and mobile wallets. Companies with a mobile app have seen that mobile apps convert 157% more than a mobile web session. Over the last six months, 79% of mobile users made an online purchase using their mobile devices.

Mobile wallets, such as Apple Pay and Android Pay have increased. Mobile commerce controls 73% of the global ecommerce market share, up from just 59% back in 2017. Mobile wallets, an app that stores credit and debit card numbers, allow customers to safely make in-store and online payments without their physical wallet in a safer and simpler way.

AI Chatbots

It’s not uncommon for customers to run into questions or need assistance when shopping online, much as they would if shopping in person. Having questions or problems addressed quickly improves customer experience and helps increase sales. Did you know that 54% of people say they would always choose a chatbot over a human rep if it saves them time? Mobile AI chatbots are being used more than ever in 2023 and seems to be on an upward trend.

Voice Search

Voice assistance, such as Siri or Alexa, has been around for awhile but voice search has now entered the ecommerce market. Voice shopping is expected to reach $40 billion in 2023, up from $2 billion in 2018.

Final Thoughts

Ecommerce grows at an incredible speed and more and more people are turning to online shopping, especially amongst the younger generation. As you consider your own ecommerce options, think of how you can implement some of these trends this year to make your customer experience even better than before.
