Movie: Moonlight
Moonlight, an award-winning film directed by Barry Jenkins follows Chiron, a Black teen in Miami coming to terms with his sexuality and his place in his community. The film received 8 nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards and won Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapter Screenplay. It also won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 2017 Golden Globes and countless other awards during the 2017 season.
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Luca Guadagnino, a critically-acclaimed Italian film director, is known for his emotionally complicated characters and lush visuals. With blockbuster hits like “Call Me By Your Name,” “Suspira,” and “Challengers,” Guadagnino demonstrates the complexities of love and relationships in his stories. Artist: Troye Sivan
Troye Sivan, a South African-born Australian artist, is one of today’s pop sensations with hits like “Rush” and “One of Your Girls.” His music videos consistently feature gay relationships and his video for “Rush” earned him his first nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Music Video. Sivan is also an actor and was in Spud and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Artist: Janelle Monáe
Janelle Monáe is a Grammy-nominated R&B singer and actress that has been in films like Moonlight, Hidden Figures and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. She has also been an outspoken activist for racial and LGBTQ+ equality and is known for her creative and fluid style. Monáe worked with Prince on a song for her second studio album and performed with him, counting him as one of her supporters. In 2014, she was named Woman of the Year by the Harvard College Black Men’s Forum’s annual Celebration of Black Women gala and in 2018, she was named Trailblazer of the Year at the Billboard Women in Music event.
