Sustainability is important to college students, but many may feel unsure of what changes to make in their lifestyle to be more friendly to the earth. Here are some ways your college store can encourage sustainability:
1 – Encourage Non-Disposable Items
One of the biggest sources of waste on college campuses are disposable items. College stores can encourage sustainability by offering non-disposable alternatives for college students. Examples of non-disposable products to carry:
- Reusable Water Bottles
A reusable water bottle takes less oil to produce which reduces the carbon footprint and replaces all the plastics that would have been used which reduces the plastic burden on landfills, oceans, streams and other places that plastic waste ends up (bebottle).
Takeya offers stainless steel water bottles, tumblers, protein shakers, travel mugs, and more. Not only are they a great sustainable option, but there are several different colors for students to choose from.
- Reusable Notebooks
The average college student can use up to 40 notebooks throughout their time in school (Rocketbook). Single-use paper creates a great deal of waste, making a reusable notebook the perfect solution. Rocketbook has reusable notebooks, planners, and index cards.
2 – Encourage Recycling
Most everyone knows that recycling is good for the environment, but another way to recycle is to buy products made from recycled materials. Benefits to this include:
- Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators.
- Conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals.
- Increases economic security by tapping a domestic source of materials.
- Prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials.
- Saves energy.
3 – Encourage Sustainable Commuting
Cars and other vehicles used on a daily basis emit a big chunk of carbon, causing climate change. According to researches, skateboarding is a way better commuting option than cars because there is no engine, fuel consumption, or large machinery parts of any kind (surfertoday).
Globe skateboards offer stylish, cool designs that college students will love.
4 – Encourage Less Energy Use
Many of us reach for the AC quickly, but alternatives are more ecofriendly. Using a fan is significantly more energy efficient. Fans use around 1% of the electricity consumed by air conditioners. You could leave a fan running for a full 24 hours and still use less energy than 15 minutes of air conditioning (USA Today).
Comfort Zone offers several fans, including desk and floor fans that are the perfect size for student dorm rooms.
