Famous Female Educators

This month, we wanted to highlight female trailblazers in the education space and showcase some of their incredible accomplishments. Read more below!

Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori was an Italian educator and innovator that shifted how people viewed children’s education and opened the first Montessori school, leading to thriving students. She also broke educational barriers herself by being the first girl in an all-boys technical institution and being one of the first female physicians to graduate from the University of Rome.

Savitribai Phule

Savitribai Phule set up the first school for girls in India and was the first female teacher in the nation. She is often heralded as a trailblazer for women’s rights and education in India.

Lucy Diggs Slowe

Lucy Diggs Slowe was an educator, athlete, the first female graduate from the Baltimore Colored School, and the first scholarship recipient of the school to attend Howard University. She was later hired as Dean of Women at Howard University and helped create a women’s campus and appoint other women as Deans of Women at other universities.

First Lady Abigail Powers Fillmore

First Lady Abigail Powers Fillmore was the first First Lady to hold a job after marriage and was a well-respected teacher. She also created a library that was a precursor to the modern public library.
